ALEXANDER, M.D., CSA...SURGEON OF THE WESTERN DISTRICT This story takes us back to the beginning of the Civil War where the son of a Mississippi plantation owner grows up. He subsequently attended medical school in Europe and then returns home to enlist in the Confederate Medical Service. His childhood friend, the son of a slave on the plantation, accompanies him as a helper. Together, they were involved with medicine and surgery throughout the Western District, including battles in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. |
